Good Afternoon,
I am trying to set up a database in an academic environment. The sql server 2012 is located on a PC identified as WH-02A-02. The database files are to be located on a shared university drive. That shared drive, s:\, is accessible for user 'AD\bioeng.user'.
When I start SQL server 2012 while logged into the network under my personal userid, b627fxyz, it comes up just fine but I do not have access to the shared drive, s:\. When I log into the network under the AD\bioeng.user id; I have access to the shared drive s:\ but I cannot connect to the SQL server. I checked the sql error log (switched back to the b627fxyz id) which stated
Error number: 18456
Severity: 14
State: 5 - which corresponds to an invalid userid.
I checked the authentication mode for the sql server for users b627fxyz and bioeng.user; both are set to window authentication mode. I have followed the guidance on http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms188670.aspx and changed to sql server authentication mode, but this is not reflected in the properties for the logins for either user.
I am at a loss as to what to do next. I need the bioeng.user account to be able to launch sql server 2012, so it can set up the database on the shared drive. What am I missing?
I also need to use the bioeng.user account to give the others access to database to input data and run queries. I will not be giving them access to create tables or delete anything. I do not have the option of using multiple accounts on the shared drive; our university it department will not support that workload.
Here are my questions:
1) is there any reason(s) the above approach will not work?
2) What do I need to do get the SQL server 2012 to recognize the bioeng.user and let him build the database?
3) Assuming sql server starts to recognize the bioeng.user, do I just set up a specific role in the database and make the students log into that role?
Thank you for your help.
More information:
While logged in as b627fxyz, I checked teh server properties window. the server authentication is set to SQL Server and Windows Authentication. but checking the properties under the login \ WH-02A-02\bioeng.user and login: WH-02A-02\AD\b627fxyz,
I find that only window authentication is checked not SQL server authentication. Most of the choices on page are grayed out, down to "Map to Credential" . What does this mean?
